Longcauseway Church
Faith, Hope and Love in the Heart of Dewsbury
About us
Longcauseway Church is a joint United Reformed Church and Methodist Church situated in the heart of Dewsbury town centre.
It is one of a group of 3 United Reformed Churches known as SPACE – The SPen and Calder Enterprise. The 3 Churches share one URC Minister (equally between them) for 75% of a working week and, being part of the North Kirklees and Morley Methodist circuit (15 Churches) the Methodist Superintendent also provides ministry at Longcauseway Church (approximately 20% time)
Our church family is a gathered community and currently numbers 40-45 people each Sunday morning, plus an average of 4 children. We hold a Messy Church once per month which averages attendance of 15.
Our Mission Statement ‘Faith, Hope and Love in the Heart of Dewsbury’ reflects our aim to become a place of hope for all, a nurturing Christian hub which will give continued support to those in need whilst helping them to develop their own potential. We also recognise our mutual need to develop and strengthen everyone’s journey of faith.
We are also developing plans to enhance, develop and improve our buildings so that they support our mission more flexibly. We currently use the adjacent retail space as a café, which we are in the process of developing to better suit our needs and create a community space/hub.
We have many missional activities throughout the week:
Tuesday Tonic: an In Stitches group meets every week to knit, crochet, chat and regularly welcomes a contingent from a local care home.
Every Wednesday we hold a café from 9am to 1.30pm and our Wellbeing Wednesday activities which are constantly being refreshed, currently we have Chair A Cise every week, Scottish Folk Dancing on the 1stand 3rd Wednesdays, and Pause. Breathe. Pray. on the first Wednesday of every month. Once a month we hold a Repair café in the same space, encouraging members of the community to release a new life on a beloved and used item before seeking to replace.
There are many other activities we are interested in trying, such as a game’s afternoon, craft sessions, and advocating for Acts 435.
On Friday our Bump, Baby and Toddler group meets (term time only)
We have an active church choir who meet to rehearse every 2 weeks and hold a concert 2 to 3 times per year.
We hold regular Bible Study sessions usually consisting of a light lunch followed by the study, we also make these available on zoom from time to time.
REWIND Christmas (Using Scripture Union Material with groups from 3 local Primary School)
Our building is used by many outside hirers, which not only brings in income but also provides us with an opportunity to engage with the community and share the gospel.
The successful person will be key to enabling the Church to engage in and develop its mission to the people of Dewsbury and it will be a great opportunity to help shape the creation and use of our new community hub and cafe.
